Citicoline(CDP Choline) is a precursor of phosphatidylcholine. As a type of phospholipid, phosphatidylcholine is an important component of cell membranes. When taken orally, Citicoline(CDP Choline) is metabolized to yield the free nucleotide, uridine, and choline. Uridine and choline cross the blood-brain barrier, become incorporated into brain membrane phospholipids and increase the production of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, including the synthesis of acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and dopamine. In the brain, Citicoline(CDP Choline) stabilizes the cell membranes and inhibits the formation of cytotoxic free fatty acids.
