Stevia Sweetener and Diabetes

When you crave something sweet, you likely reach for sugar-filled foods. But sugar, and other natural sweeteners such as honey and molasses, can elevate blood sugar levels. Stevia(Stevioside), which comes from the herb Stevia rebaudiana, is widely used as a sweetener around the world and is safe for diabetics.

Stevioside is a glycoside derived from the stevia plant, which can be used as a sweetener. Stevioside from Stevia rebaudiana have been reported to be between 30 and 320 times sweeter than sucrose.

Additionally, they do not induce a glycemic response when ingested, because humans can not metabolize stevia. This making them attractive as natural sugar substitutes for diabetics and other people on carbohydrate-controlled diets. Stevioside stimulates the insulin secretion through potentiation of the β-cell, preventing high blood glucose after a meal.
