What is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a kind of carotenoid and is a strong natural antioxidant. Same as other carotenoids, astaxanthin is a fat-soluble and water-soluble pigment found in marine organisms such as shrimp, crab, squid, and algae. The antioxidant capacity of astaxanthin is 550 times that of vitamin E and 10 times that of β-carotene. Therefore, astaxanthin is packaged as a health food product for sale in the market.

As the most effective natural antioxidant, astaxanthin, the most important function is to scavenge free radicals and improve the body's anti-aging ability. Astaxanthin can significantly inhibit chemical-induced initial carcinogenesis, and has anti-proliferative effects and immune enhancement on epithelial cells exposed to carcinogens, such as inhibition of bladder cancer, oral cancer, colon cancer, gastric cancer and breast cancer. Astaxanthin also reduces the carcinogenicity of aflatoxins and works well for reducing the amount and volume of aflatoxin-induced liver tumor cells.
