What is minoxidil?
Minoxidil, chemical name 6-(1-piperidinyl)-2,4-pyrimidinediamine, 3-oxide, is a white or off-white crystalline powder. Slightly soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in chloroform or water, very slightly soluble in acetone; dissolved in glacial acetic acid. Clinically, as a potassium ion channel opener, it can directly relax vascular smooth muscle, has a strong expansion of small arteries, so that peripheral resistance decreases, blood pressure drops, and has no effect on volumetric blood vessels, so it can promote venous return. At the same time, cardiac output and heart rate can be increased due to the reflex regulation and positive frequency action, but no orthostatic hypotension is caused.
